Piaget's Classroom Applications
In the classroom, I believe this is a very important theory to use to help students get more interested in the information as well to help them better understand what is being taught. Knowing that students learn better by learning about the world around them, I can use it in my math classes is making sure my students are able to see how problems are from the real world. Real world problem and word problems with applications outside of the classroom is one way to apply this. These questions give examples of problems that people face everyday as bankers, engineers, and in everyday life. Seeing how useful certain information is can help motivate the students to want to learn more about it. A simple question of applying algebra techniques to find the distance between two points and finding the time it take to get there. One of the interesting and unique things about math is that it is universal and the same no matter where you go. This can be related to the world by helping students see that students in Germany and China are learning the same thing they are. The relation could involve money from other countries to count up how much is there. The same math techniques will be used just different names. This will be obvious for the students to see after the project.
It is also very important as a math teacher to show the students how ideas connect and relate to one another. I personally find new information being taught to me is more easily understood when it is related to a previous topic. One way I can do this is by making sure all of my lessons are planned out in advanced with the material building on each other everyday. The skills learned in algebra class are the basics that are used throughout other math classes. Algebra is need to solve geometryquestions, calculus questions, and also in more advanced classes. When teaching how to FOIL in a pre-algebra classroom can be made easier by telling the students it is just multiplication that they have been doing for years. Making sure students know this should help emphasize how important it is to fully understand all the concepts being taught. Through my lesson I will remind the students of the topics we have done in the past and of what they should know from the past, as well as tell them how it will connect in the future.
